ITALIAN QUAKE LOSSES GROW – TEMBLOR
LEVELS CITIES -NEW DANGER FROM FLOODS

Rome. Jan. 15.—Every hour swells the casualty list of the earthquake disaster. Official and unofficial reports reaching Premier Salandra, in charge of the relief work, show that towns heretofore believed immune have suffered. The Latest estimates of the dead say that at least 30.000 fell victims to the quake. The list of injured may reach 100,000.

The minister of public works, who is at the scene of the disaster, today wired Premier Salandra that every city, town and village in the Lira valley has been damaged, with many of the inhabitants dead and wounded. The government is still greatly concerned about conditions at Magliano de Marsi, where refugees reported that 1,300 persons had been killed.

The water supply of practically every city and town In the earth-quake zone has been cut off. Fortunately at only a few points did fire occur In the ruins. If the ruins had caught fire the death list would have been very greatly increased, as at many points victims were entombed for more than 24 hours before the soldiers managed to dig them out.

The valley below stricken Avezzano is now facing a new danger. The outflow of Lake Fucino has been dammed by the earthquake and It is feared that unless this speedily can be remedied a break will come and the valley will be flooded. Engineers are at work now endeavoring to solve this problem.

Many of the victims were buried alive In the ruins of their homes. Reports from the stricken section say the soldiers are taking many persons out alive. but for the most part seriously hurt. Twenty of the 150 girls who were penned in the ruins of the young women’s seminary In Avezzano were taken out alive. All of the others perished.
Fragmentary stories reaching here tell of hundreds of cases of heroism. Mothers sacrificed their lives for their babies. Fathers died that their children might live. Men dug frantically into the ruins under tottering walls in response to groans and appeals for help from buried victims. So far as is yet known at no point was there any cowardice or any brutality of the strong against the weak.

Many of the survivors went temporarily insane as a result of their experience. Men who found their entire families crushed to death in the ruins of their homes and women who managed themselves to reach safety when they found that their loved ones had perished tried in turn to kill themselves and had to be restrained.

One of the students at the normal college at Avezzano, Miss Torsetti, had a remarkable escape from death. She was dug out of the ruined strucsure today unhurt but hysterical from her experience.

”When the shock came” she said, “my companions and all of the teachers were In the college chapel at morning prayer. Suddenly the great gold cross was shaken from the altar and fell to the floor. At the same time the entire building shook and then the walls began to crumble. Many of the girls fell fainting to the floor. The remainder fled screaming from the room and down the stairs.

“I managed to reach the lower floor. The remainder fled screaming. When I revived I found myself in a dark room. There was no way of getting out. Many of my chums were there, moaning and badly hurt. A teacher lay at my feet, dead. I tried the doors but they were blocked with debris. There was no way of getting to the windows.

“I tried to revive some of my chums but many were dead. It was terribly cold and my sufferings were intense. Finally today I heard voices and realized that help was at hand.
I screamed, but seemingly could not make myself heard. Suddenly, just as I was about to abandon hope, a ray of light shot into my prison. The soldiers digging had uncovered the roof of my living tomb. I called to them and they finally rescued me and the few of my companions that were still alive.

The chief death list is at Avezzano, which official statements say “no longer exists.” 10.479 persona are dead there; 1.300 are dead at Cappelle. 3,000 at San Benedetto, 4.000 at Pescina, and more than 1.000 have been reported killed from towns and villages scattered throughout the entire earthquake zone, Ortucchio, which had 2,400 Inhabitants, and Gioia de’Marsi, which had 3.500. are reported to have been practically wiped off the map

CRESCONO LE VITTIME DEL TERREMOTO ITALIANO – TREMORE RADE AL SUOLO CITTA’ – NUOVO PERICOLO DI ALLUVIONI

Roma, 15 Gennaio – ogny ora gonfia la lista delle vittime del disastro sismico. Rapporti ufficiali e non che stanno raggiungendo il Primo Ministro salandra, a capo dei lavori di soccorso, mostrano che paesi finora ritenuti immuni hanno sofferto. Le ultime stime dei morti dicono che almeno 30.000 sono caduti vittime del sisma. La lista dei feriti potrebbe raggiungere 100.000.

Il ministro dei lavori pubblici, che è sul luogo del disastro, ha oggi trasmesso al Premier Salandra che ogni città, paese e villaggio nella valle del Liri è stato danneggiato, con molti degli abitanti morti e feriti. Il governo è ancora molto preoccupato circa le condizioni di Magliano de Marsi, dove i profughi riportano che 1.300 persone sono rimaste uccise.

La fornitura d’acqua di praticamente ogni città e paese nella zona del terremoto è stata interrotta. Fortunatamente solo in pochi punti si sono sviluppati incendi nelle rovine. Se le rovine avessero preso fuoco la lista dei morti sarebbe aumentata grandemente, in quanto, in molti punti, vittime sono rimaste sepolte per più di 24 ore prima che i soldati riuscissero a tirarle fuori.

La valle sottostante la colpita Avezzano si trova ora di fronte ad un nuovo pericolo. Il deflusso del lago Fucino è stato arginato dal terremoto e si teme che, se ciò non si può rimediare rapidamente, ci potrà essere un crollo e la valle sarà allagata. Gli ingegneri Sono al lavoro ora cercando di risolvere questo problema.

Molte delle vittime sono state sepolte vive nelle rovine delle loro case. Rapporti della sezione colpita riportano che i soldati stanno tirando fuori molte persone vive, ma per la maggior parte gravemente ferite. Venti delle 150 Ragazze che erano intrappolate nelle rovine del Seminario per Giovani Donne ad Avezzano sono state portate fuori vive. Tutte le Altre sono morte.
Racconti frammentari che ci raggiungono raccontano di centinaia di casi di eroismo. Madri che hanno sacrificato la loro vita per i loro bambini. Padri morti affinchè i loro figli potessero vivere. Gli uomini scavano freneticamente nelle rovine sotto pareti traballanti in risposta a gemiti e appelli di aiuto da parte delle vittime sepolte. Per quanto ci é noto in nessun momento si sono verificati atti di viltà o da brutalità dei forti contro i deboli.

Molti dei sopravvissuti hanno perso temporaneamente il senno a causa della loro esperienza. Uomini che hanno trovato le loro famiglie schiacciate a morte tra le rovine delle loro caso e donne che sono riuscite a mettersi in salvo, quando hanno scoperto che i loro cari erano morti hanno cercato a loro volta di uccidersi e sono dovuti essere trattenuti.

Uno degli studenti del Collegio Normale ad Avezzano, la sig.na Torsetti, ha avuto un notevole scampato pericolo di morte. E’ stata disseppolta oggi dalla struttura crollata, illesa ma isterica per la sua esperienza.

“Quando è avvenuta la scossa”, ha detto, “i miei compagni e tutti gli insegnanti erano nella cappella del collegio per le lodi mattutine. Improvvisamente la grande croce d’oro é stata scossa dall’altare e é caduta a terra. Allo Stesso tempo, l’intero edificio ha tremato e poi le pareti hanno cominciato a sgretolarsi. Molte delle ragazze sono cadute svenute sul pavimento. il resto è scappato urlando dalla stanza e giù per le scale.

“Sono riuscita a raggiungere il piano inferiore. Le altre sono fuggite urlando. Quando sono tornata in me, mi sono trovato in una stanza buia. Non c’era modo di uscirne. Molti dei miei compagni erano lì, gemendo e gravemente feriti. Un insegnante giaceva ai miei piedi, morto. Ho provato le porte, ma erano bloccate dai detriti. Non c’era modo di raggiungere le finestre.

Ho cercato di far rinvenire alcuni dei miei compagni, ma molti erano morti. Era terribilmente freddo e soffrivo intensamente. Finalmente, oggi, ho sentito delle voci e mi sono resa conto che aiuto era a portata di mano.

Ho urlato, ma apparentemente non riuscivo a farmi sentire. Improvvisamente, proprio quando stavo per abbandonare la speranza, un raggio di luce é penetrato nella mia prigione. I Soldati scavando avevano scoperchiato il tetto della mia tomba vivente. Li ho chiamato e finalmente mi hanno salvato e quelli dei miei compagni che erano ancora vivi.

La lista maggiore di caduti é ad Avezzano, che le dichiarazioni ufficiali dicono “non esiste ha Più”. 10.479 persone sono morte lì; 1.300 sono i morti a Cappelle. 3.000 a San Benedetto, 4.000 a Pescina, e Più di 1.000 sono stati segnalati uccisi in città e villaggi sparsi in tutta la zona del terremoto, Ortucchio che aveva 2.400 abitanti, e Gioia de’ Marsi, che ne aveva 3.500. sono riportati essere stato praticamente cancellato dalle carte geografiche.
